Resources and links

There's so much already out there in this space, I wanted to provide some suggested resources, people, and reading for those who are keen to learn more. I'll be adding to this list over time, so please do send me any suggestions!

Food and diets

My number one recommendation to get started in the anti-diet space is the Maintenance Phase podcast. They do some hilarious debunking of diet culture and wellness bullshit. I'd start with their earlier episodes, debunking important fundamentals like the relationship between weight and health, the "calories in, calories out" myth, BMI, and the obesity epidemic.

If you're interested in intuitive eating, nutritionist Laura Thomas has done some great work in this space, so I'd recommend:

  • Her first book, Just Eat It - a good practical overview of how to get started with intuitive eating
  • Her second book How to Just Eat It - a more practical workbook with lots of activities
  • Her current writing and podcasting on Can I Have Another Snack - she focusses especially on family and parenting nutrition (but there's plenty in there for us non-parents, too!)
  • Her previous podcast, Don't Salt my Game also has a lot of great episodes

Intuitive and joyful movement

Tally Rye is a personal trainer specialising in intuitive movement, who also has book and a great podcast.

Michelle Segar is a behavioural scientist who pioneered the concept of "joyful movement". She has a couple of books - I've read "The Joy Choice", here's a post on my thoughts.

Exercising with disabilities or chronic conditions

Chimera health offers specialist online exercise programmes for people with hypermobile spectrum disorder and hypermobile Ehler's Danlos Syndome. Melissa has a PhD in physical therapy and lives with hEDS herself, and she is BRILLIANT. Follow her on Insta for great snippets of advice.
